I've got an idea in my head of a world where exotic creatures exist and are taken in as pets, and used to race one-another for fun. So I got playing around with a few initial creature designs to see what would come out. Inspired by Bobby Chiu's work.

I've finished the short portrait course taught by Louis Smith. Learnt some useful things and overall was very happy I did it.

Glazes still need to be worked over it and edges softened / hardened.

This is the 2nd version I did outside of the course. The first attempt sucked bad as I was trying to wrap my head around new processes.

This weeks Character of the Week @ CA is about Courtiers. I wanted to do Indians with magic because I think it's bad arse. This guy is going to be the courtier to a mystical ruler. He acts as a gateway between him and the people. He doesn't look much but he can whoop arse with that magical cane.

I read a cool tutorial on building up a painting at Adam Ford's blog who does godly concept art. I've spent the week drawing a lot of crap and this is the only thing that shows progress. I used Ford's composition and colour scheme in that tutorial because I have no imagination.

I'm going through a bit of a cave man phase and have set myself an imaginary project. So I guess this is the generic big bad dude with an I.Q of a dried up turd. Also, Asterik's turns 50, fuck yeah.

I tried to correct the surface to make it workable, and made some progress with it, but I felt too far gone and the quality was being compromised- so I restarted it. I'm taking it much slower this time and I'm happier with how it's developing.

Drawing Clinic

I recently purchased a DVD by Anthony Waichulis which includes basic drawing exercises. They're incredibly simple but in practice take a lot of time to perfect. I already find myself learning to control and blend better, and my concentration has also been increased - they'd be great for warm-up exercises, too. I'd recommend the DVD to any one wanting to have more control over their drawing medium (it's a bargain). I'm now ready for the final lesson which will be a basic still life. I just need to find some basic objects I can assemble together.

I also received my radial easel today along with a bunch of other art supplies. I'll edit this post with some pictures of my drawing/painting shack soon.

You should check out Anthony's work - he's a disgustingly skilled painter.

I've gone and booked a 9 week course with Bobby Chiu (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/port-artist-bob-01.html). I'm really looking forward to it as not only is he a favorite illustrator of mine but I've heard nothing but positive feedback from it. A loan well spent, I'd say.

This is a tiny (5x6") self portrait I did on primed hardboard. It's a very cheap, smooth, low-absorbent surface to work on. Much more preferable to canvas, I think. The weave of a canvas can be cumbersome when working into small details, and the higher absorbency rate makes it harder to wipe away any mistakes. The idea of using a canvas for general painting is more to do with modern thinking. Canvases where ideal when artists lived near the shipping docks and when you had to work on a much lager scale, but besides that, there isn't really any added benefit.
